The house is an outstanding example of late 19th – early 20th-century architecture.
Built in 1881 by Giorgi Kartvelishvili, a prominent philanthropist, public figure, and merchant of the first guild, who was a well-known patron of Georgian culture, literature, and music.
In the early 20th century, his son Nikoloz Kartvelishvili commissioned architect Simon Kldiashvili to reconstruct the building. As a result, the facade acquired Art Nouveau elements, becoming one of the first examples of this style in Tbilisi.
Architecture & Features:
The facade is decorated with unique elements, including metal balconies and artistic details characteristic of the Art Nouveau period. At the entrance, there is a unique Georgian inscription "Salami" (Greetings), making the building a standout in the historic city center.
The interiors were originally adorned with painted walls featuring Northern European mythology and romantic scenes, creating the atmosphere of a refined cultural salon.
Cultural Heritage:
The Kartvelishvili house served as a cultural hub for Tbilisi. It hosted musical and literary salons, gathering intellectuals, artists, writers, and musicians. The building was a venue for theatrical performances and concerts featuring famous artists of the time. Nikoloz himself was Paris-educated in music.
Today, the building remains a preserved cultural and architectural monument of Tbilisi.
A legacy of the 19th century.
