The house is an outstanding example of late 19th – early 20th-century architecture.
The building was constructed in 1881 by George Kartvelishvili, a patron of the arts, public figure, and merchant of the First Guild, who was known as a philanthropist and active sponsor of Georgian culture, literature, and music.
In the early 20th century, his son, Nikoloz Kartvelishvili, invited architect Simon Kldiashvili to reconstruct the house. As a result, the facade acquired elements of European Art Nouveau and became one of the first examples of this style in Tbilisi.
Architecture and Features:
The facade is decorated with unique elements, including metal balconies and artistic details characteristic of the Art Nouveau period.
At the entrance, there is an unusual inscription in Georgian — "Salami" (Greeting), making the building unique in the city's historic center.
The interiors were adorned with painted walls featuring Northern European mythological motifs and romantic scenes, creating the atmosphere of a cultural salon.
Cultural Life and Soirées:
The Kartvelishvili house was not just a residence, but a cultural hub of Tbilisi. It hosted soirées, musical, and literary salons attended by the intelligentsia, artists, writers, and musicians. Theatrical performances and musical concerts were held here, featuring famous artists of the time. Nikoloz himself received a musical education in Paris.
Today, the house remains a significant cultural and architectural monument of Tbilisi.
A legacy of the 19th century.
